<description>At Draw Near, we explore the beautiful truth that God, out of His deep and personal love for each of us, takes the first step to draw near. But this divine movement calls for a response—a response that shapes our lives and transforms our hearts. Together, we embark on this journey of faith, discovering the many ways God's grace and the power of the Holy Spirit work within us.
Rooted in the Catholic faith, our podcast is a space where authenticity meets joy. We’re two best friends navigating life, family, and faith with honesty, humility, and a lot of love. Each episode is a heartfelt conversation—sometimes deep, sometimes lighthearted, but always real. We strive to be vulnerable, faithful, and passionate, sharing insights and stories to inspire you on your path toward Christ.
This is more than a podcast; it’s a shared journey toward sainthood. So come laugh with us, reflect with us, and grow with us as we Draw Near to God and one another. Let’s set out together on this adventure of faith, friendship, and grace.

<description>What if being united to God begins with being cut open?
In this episode of Draw Near, we explore Romans 11 and the powerful image of being “grafted” into God. Using the biblical metaphor of the olive tree, St. Paul reveals something profound about the spiritual life: union with God is living, dependent, and deeply transformative.
Grafting is no gentle process. It requires cutting, exposure, and vulnerability before new life can take hold. And the same is true in our relationship with God. He does not simply improve us from the outside; he works within us, cutting away what is hardened so that we can receive his life more fully.
We reflect on how God is the root who sustains us, how we are invited to remain in him, and what it means to bear interior fruit fruit that comes not from our own strength, but from grace. Drawing connections to Ezekiel 36 and the promise of a new heart, this episode invites you to consider how God may be at work in the hidden places of your life; and what areas of your own life have you hardened?
If you’ve ever wrestled with vulnerability, struggled to trust God in the midst of difficulty, or wondered how real transformation actually happens—this conversation is for you.

<itunes:subtitle>What happens when date night turns into a recorded conversation? This week, Kara invites her husband BJ on the podcast for an at-home date drawn straight from Draw Near's soon-to-be released marriage resource, "Near to You." With prayer, Scripture, vulnerability, and a lot of fun, they explore how words can either build intimacy or quietly erode it... and how God meets us right in the middle of our marriages.</itunes:subtitle>

<description>BJ and Kara go on a date, and they invite you to listen in.
This week on Draw Near, Kara is joined by a very special guest: her husband, BJ!! Join a recorded at-home date centered on one of the most important (and challenging) aspects of marriage: communication.
The date follows one of the intentional at-home dates from Draw Near's soon-to-be-released marriage resource, Near to You (https://www.drawnear.me/drawnearshop/p/near-to-you-a-10-date-marriage-retreat-at-home-pre-order), a collection of ten guided dates designed to help married couples draw nearer to God and to one another at any stage of marriage.
Set at the kitchen table (in sweats, with homemade cocktails), Kara and BJ invite you into a relaxed evening that includes prayer, Scripture, reflection, meaningful conversation, and a goofy game to close the night. Along the way, they talk honestly about how communication styles develop over time, how conflict and silence can affect intimacy, and how words or actions can become instruments of love within marriage.
Whether you’re newly married, years into marriage, or simply curious about building a healthy faith-filled relationship, this episode offers encouragement, honesty, and practical ideas you can bring into your own relationship.

<description>Draw Near is still here—and this episode is all about returning to our "why."
After a season of being in and out, adjusting rhythms, and letting life take its course, we wanted to speak honestly about where Draw Near is right now and how God has been gently guiding us forward. This episode invites you into our discernment, hope, and trust.
Rooted in Isaiah 42:3, we reflect on the image of the Servant who does not break a bruised reed or extinguish a dimly burning wick. These words have shaped how we understand this season; It has not been a failure or fading, but as a time of careful tending. Jesus knows how to work with what is fragile. He repairs without rushing and restores without pressure.
We share how this passage has helped us see the recent shifts in Draw Near as an invitation to listen more closely, allowing the Spirit to breathe life into the work in more sustainable ways. The mission remains. The vision endures. What’s changing is the rhythm.
If you’ve ever wondered whether something good was slipping away—or whether a quieter season meant God was less present—this episode is for you.

<description>What do Dungeons &amp;amp; Dragons, Harry Potter, the Walking Dead, and A Quiet Place have in common?
In this episode, we have some fun exploring how even the most unlikely movies and shows can open doors to deeper conversations about faith. From unlikely heroes and the battle of good and evil, to themes of sacrifice, friendship, and courage... we discover that God can shine through stories we never expected.
This isn’t about forcing a religious lens where it doesn’t belong. It’s about learning to see with eyes of faith, and enjoying the creative ways truth, beauty, and goodness can break through, even in secular media.
Pull up some popcorn and join us for this lighthearted conversation where we share some of our favorite shows and movies, laugh a little, and give you new eyes for the next time you hit “play.”
What You’ll Hear in This Episode:
How secular stories can echo the Gospel when we learn to look deeper
Why Christian themes show up in unexpected places (and why that matters)
The power of sacrifice, courage, and friendship on screen
A few of our favorite movies and shows (and why we like them!)

<description>Do our pets go to heaven?
It’s one of those questions people of all ages wonder about. Whether it’s sparked by watching All Dogs Go to Heaven as a kid, or by the very real grief of saying goodbye to a beloved family pet, the thought lingers: Will I see them again?
In this episode, Kara shares her family’s personal experience of losing a pet—and how that moment of loss opened up bigger questions of faith, hope, and what God has in store for all creation. Together, let's explore the possibilities by looking at what Scripture and the Catechism actually say about heaven and the renewal of all things. Here, Kara will share her own considerations, as well!

<itunes:subtitle>Is it possible to feel joy in the midst of sorrow? Can we call Holy Week happy even while meditating on the suffering of Jesus? In this short and heartfelt Holy Week reflection, Fred and Kara share a deeply personal and spiritually rich meditation on John 11—the raising of Lazarus.

Together, we explore what it means for Jesus to stand before our tombs and call us by name, how we’re invited into community to help “unbind” one another from the grave clothes of fear, shame, and sin, and how the resurrection is not just something we believe in—it’s something we’re called to live.

Whether you're walking through grief, wrestling with God's timing, or just longing for renewal, this episode is a companion for your journey toward Easter joy. You’ll also hear stories from our own lives, encouragement for your spiritual walk, and a Holy Week challenge to invite God into your deepest burdens.</itunes:subtitle>

<itunes:subtitle>"Treat me like a human being." These were the words of a friend of ours recounting a difficult situation to us recently. These words have stuck with us since. We - like so many we'd be willing to guess - often speak of the "dignity of the human person," and yet belief in that dignity is not always evident in the experiences of daily life. Christ tells us that the world will know us by our love for one another; that we are to love one another as he has loved us. Yet, we gossip, we slander. We are quick to desire empathy and we want to be given the benefit of the doubt, but we are not always so quick to extend that to others. How can we overcome this? What are the implications of the dignity of each human person, on the way we live our lives as social beings? These are some of the topics we dive into with our good friend, and special guest, Sr Fidelis Marie. </itunes:subtitle>

*Some of the questions we discuss: *
What’s the difference between gossip and venting? When is venting unhealthy?
What is the line between getting something off of our chest and being uncharitable?
Has our culture trained us to not treat one another as human beings?
What role does evaluating the intentions of others and the practice of empathy play in your interior life?
Is there value in reflecting on how our own wounds and experiences can shape how we interact with others and perceive things?
How should these experiences shape your relationships with others? How can we overcome our tendency to desire empathy and understanding from others but be less inclined to extend it?
What role does vulnerability and authenticity play?

We invite you (and your family) to enjoy... in the words of Linus from the Peanuts, what Christmas is all about. This is a purely "sit back and relax," "story time" sort of "shorty" episode. <itunes:subtitle>In our walk with the Lord, we can be tempted to take pride in what we see as "our own accomplishments." We may not realize it or admit it, but it is easy to succumb to. We can also give into discouragement when we believe ourselves to not be living up to our own standards (or the standards of others). Our "I Believe in Love" book study launches November 29, 2022 on Suscipe.co. We thought it would be great to offer another preview of some of the discussions! Please enjoy this clip from Chapter 3, where we discuss how St Therese's "Little Way" is a better, and more sure approach to the temptations toward pride on one hand, and discouragement on the other. </itunes:subtitle>

<description>In our walk with the Lord, we can be tempted to take pride in what we see as "our own accomplishments." We may not realize it or admit it, but it is easy to succumb to.

<itunes:subtitle>As we celebrate Thanksgiving this year, we have found ourselves reflecting a lot on gratitude and the Lord's faithfulness. It's always good to take some time and reflect on what we have to be thankful for. Because we enjoy sharing our own lives with our listeners, we thought we would discuss those things that we are most thankful for this Thanksgiving. We hope this will be a blessing to you this year. As Scripture and experience both make clear, the word of our testimony is a great way to edify one another and inspire gratitude.

Even during a season of quiet, where at times it seems like the Lord has been asleep in the boat during the storm (more on this in our I Believe in Love book study), we have found ourselves overwhelmed with thankfulness. Listen to hear why! </itunes:subtitle>

<itunes:subtitle>In this episode, we share some exciting news and rejoice in being back in the studio together for the first time since May! Reflecting on leading a time of music and prayer this past summer, we discuss one of our favorite songs, "Reckless Love" by Cory Asbury. Though not a new song, it is a phrase that has been debated. Is God's love reckless? What does that even mean? Does the phrase "reckless love" of God even mean "reckless" in the usual sense of the word? We would say no, not at all. So what does it mean? Listen as we get a bit more personal and share a bit of our journey with you as we reflect on the words of this song. </itunes:subtitle>

<description>Exciting news! Major life changes! And the future of Draw Near. All these are discussed in this episode. We also take a few moments to consider the problems with the way we typically say goodbye and the need to encourage one another. Why should we express gratitude and not take for granted that those closest to us know how much we love and care for them.
Mentioned in this episode:
Hebrews 10:24-25
and let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Romans 15:2
let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to edify him.
1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.
Romans 15:5
May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus,
St Pauls examples of praise and thanksgiving for others:
I thank my God every time I remember you.
I thank my God always, making mention of you in my prayers.
St Therese on edifying others:
Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice, here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always doing the smallest right and doing it all for love.
A word or a smile is often enough to put fresh life in a despondent soul.

<itunes:subtitle>December 8th is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Listen to this Draw Near podcast "shorty" to learn more about this feast. Mary was set apart for all of time! Scripture shows this. The Blessed Mother was preserved from original sin from the moment of her creation. Listen to Kara teach a Scriptural study on Mary and the Catholic dogma of her Immaculate Conception.

<description>For such a long time, I (Kara) thought the Immaculate Conception was all about Jesus. After all… he was miraculously conceived! BUT this Feast, which we celebrate today on December 8th, is All. About. MARY!
Mary was immaculately conceived in the womb of her mother. She was created without the stain of Original Sin. She was always “Full of Grace.”
In this “shorty” Kara dives into a Scriptural study of key texts to point to Mary’s Immaculate Conception with hopes that each listener would be drawn deeper into the celebration of this feast and Holy Day of obligation.
Questions answered:
1. How do we know Mary was special or set apart?
1. What is the Immaculate Conception?
1. What is Original Sin? Where is that in Scripture?
1. Where is Mary’s Immaculate Conception found in Scripture?
*Words Referenced: *
Kecharitōmenē: Greek word for “full of grace” in Luke 1:28
Charis: Greek word meaning grace

<description>In this Scriptural shorty, Kara takes on the topic of the Papacy. Have you ever wondered why the Catholic Church has a Pope? Where is that in the Bible? What is the purpose of the Pope?
Study of Scripture and the teachings of the Church should always point us to the love of Christ! The papacy does this; it points to the love of Christ! How?
Mentioned in this episode:
* Matthew 16: 13-20
* 2 Samuel 7: 11-14; 16
* Isaiah 22: 15; 19-23

<itunes:subtitle>It isn’t uncommon for Catholics to hear that we put too much emphasis on Mary... or, “She’s not that important…She’s barely even in scripture.” Well… Mary is ALL over scripture.
This "shorty" teaches on Mary as the Ark of the New Covenant.
What is the Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament? How does Luke's Gospel present Mary as the New Ark? What does this have to do with the Assumption? Find out in this shorty!</itunes:subtitle>
