<description>At Draw Near, we explore the beautiful truth that God, out of His deep and personal love for each of us, takes the first step to draw near. But this divine movement calls for a response—a response that shapes our lives and transforms our hearts. Together, we embark on this journey of faith, discovering the many ways God's grace and the power of the Holy Spirit work within us.
Rooted in the Catholic faith, our podcast is a space where authenticity meets joy. We’re two best friends navigating life, family, and faith with honesty, humility, and a lot of love. Each episode is a heartfelt conversation—sometimes deep, sometimes lighthearted, but always real. We strive to be vulnerable, faithful, and passionate, sharing insights and stories to inspire you on your path toward Christ.
This is more than a podcast; it’s a shared journey toward sainthood. So come laugh with us, reflect with us, and grow with us as we Draw Near to God and one another. Let’s set out together on this adventure of faith, friendship, and grace.

<itunes:subtitle>Suffering is where transformation begins, but what does that have to do with Lent?

In this Ash Wednesday episode of Draw Near, Fred and Kara explore the meaning of penance, the purpose of the desert season, and how suffering can become a place of spiritual growth that leads toward resurrection. Why does Lent begin with ashes and words about death? How does penance train the heart? And how does the journey through sacrifice open us to new life in Christ?</itunes:subtitle>

<description>Suffering is where transformation begins! What does that have to do with Lent?
Many of us approach Lent thinking about what we have to give up. But what if Lent isn’t mainly about loss… but about what God wants to build within us?
In this episode, we explore the deeper meaning of penance, suffering, and the desert season of Lent. Why does the Church begin with ashes and words about death? How does penance actually train the heart? And why does every sacrifice ultimately point toward resurrection?
Journal Questions:
1. Where in my life right now feels like a desert, and how might God be inviting me to encounter Him there rather than escape it?
2. What comfort, habit, or attachment might God be asking me to surrender so He can build something deeper in me?
3. If resurrection always follows the cross, what “new life” might God be preparing in me through this season?

<itunes:subtitle>What happens when date night turns into a recorded conversation? This week, Kara invites her husband BJ on the podcast for an at-home date drawn straight from Draw Near's soon-to-be released marriage resource, "Near to You." With prayer, Scripture, vulnerability, and a lot of fun, they explore how words can either build intimacy or quietly erode it... and how God meets us right in the middle of our marriages.</itunes:subtitle>

<description>BJ and Kara go on a date, and they invite you to listen in.
This week on Draw Near, Kara is joined by a very special guest: her husband, BJ!! Join a recorded at-home date centered on one of the most important (and challenging) aspects of marriage: communication.
The date follows one of the intentional at-home dates from Draw Near's soon-to-be-released marriage resource, Near to You (https://www.drawnear.me/drawnearshop/p/near-to-you-a-10-date-marriage-retreat-at-home-pre-order), a collection of ten guided dates designed to help married couples draw nearer to God and to one another at any stage of marriage.
Set at the kitchen table (in sweats, with homemade cocktails), Kara and BJ invite you into a relaxed evening that includes prayer, Scripture, reflection, meaningful conversation, and a goofy game to close the night. Along the way, they talk honestly about how communication styles develop over time, how conflict and silence can affect intimacy, and how words or actions can become instruments of love within marriage.
Whether you’re newly married, years into marriage, or simply curious about building a healthy faith-filled relationship, this episode offers encouragement, honesty, and practical ideas you can bring into your own relationship.

How secular stories can echo the Gospel when we learn to look deeper
Why Christian themes show up in unexpected places (and why that matters)
The power of sacrifice, courage, and friendship on screen

<description>Do our pets go to heaven?
It’s one of those questions people of all ages wonder about. Whether it’s sparked by watching All Dogs Go to Heaven as a kid, or by the very real grief of saying goodbye to a beloved family pet, the thought lingers: Will I see them again?
In this episode, Kara shares her family’s personal experience of losing a pet—and how that moment of loss opened up bigger questions of faith, hope, and what God has in store for all creation. Together, let's explore the possibilities by looking at what Scripture and the Catechism actually say about heaven and the renewal of all things. Here, Kara will share her own considerations, as well!

<itunes:subtitle>Is it possible to feel joy in the midst of sorrow? Can we call Holy Week happy even while meditating on the suffering of Jesus? In this short and heartfelt Holy Week reflection, Fred and Kara share a deeply personal and spiritually rich meditation on John 11—the raising of Lazarus.

Together, we explore what it means for Jesus to stand before our tombs and call us by name, how we’re invited into community to help “unbind” one another from the grave clothes of fear, shame, and sin, and how the resurrection is not just something we believe in—it’s something we’re called to live.

Whether you're walking through grief, wrestling with God's timing, or just longing for renewal, this episode is a companion for your journey toward Easter joy. You’ll also hear stories from our own lives, encouragement for your spiritual walk, and a Holy Week challenge to invite God into your deepest burdens.</itunes:subtitle>

<itunes:subtitle>This week on Draw Near, we dive into one of the most beloved parables in all of Scripture—the Prodigal Son. But this time, we ask three questions that challenge us to look deeper:

How is God’s love different from the love we experience from others—or even from ourselves?

What does “coming home to the Father” look like in real life?

And how do we respond when grace feels... unfair?

With humor, vulnerability, and heart, we reflect on the extravagant mercy of God, the wounds we carry in how we love (and fail to love), and the real-life humility it takes to return home—again and again. Whether you relate most to the younger son, the older son, or the waiting father, there’s something here for you.</itunes:subtitle>
